Seven actors who played Munchkins in the 1939 film classic The Wizard of Oz were present at a ceremony yesterday honoring “The Munchkins” with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The star was placed—and the ceremony took place—outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, where the film premiered all those years ago. Theirs is the 2,352nd star on the walk.
The seven diminutive actors who represented their nearly 100 fellows (each of whom was paid $125 a week for their work on the picture) were: Mickey Carroll, Ruth Duccini, Jerry Maren, Margaret Pellegrini, Meinhardt Raabe, Karl Slover, and Clarence Swensen. Some photos of the festivities are available in this article in the Independent (which reports that nine of the actors still survive). This Los Angeles Times article has more pictures, but claims that only the seven present survive. More details on the movie, including a seemingly complete cast list, are available on IMDB.
