Top Box Office Grossers: Fifth Week of July

Variety reports the top 25 movies for the week of 20-26 July in terms of box office take. A new week, a new movie, a new number 1, and the genre leader is down from #2 to #3: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix took in $26.8 million in its third week in release, bringing its total past a quarter billion, to $251.5 million. Transformers dropped from #4 to #6, taking in $17.3 million for a total of $290.4 million (Transformers opened the week before Harry Potter). And that’s it for the top ten: two genre movies.
Last week Sunshine was #24 on the list, open in a very few theaters. This week it saw wider release, and jumped to #13 on the list, taking in $1.9 million to give it a total US box office of $2.2 million. Evan Almighty took an almighty plummet, dropping from #8 to #15 in its sixth week in release (as it dropped from 1779 screens showing it to 1010). This week, it grossed $1.8 million for a total of $97 million. 1408 fell right beside it (losing 470 of its 1451 theaters), down from #9 to #17, grossing $1.7 million in its sixth week in release, bringing its total take to $70.5 million. Shrek the Third, last week’s #17, was #19 this week (it picked up a few engagements, from last week’s 408 to this week’s 455), still grossing seven figures ($1.0 million) for an 11-week total of $320.2 million. Fantastsic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer was down from #14 to #20, and from 601 screens to 390; and its gross was down to $715 thousand (total: $130 million).
