The big annual science fiction awards are usually handed out at WorldCon, but with this year’s WorldCon taking place in Japan, some of the other awards were announced at Archon 31, which was also known as TuckerCon, and which was this year’s North American Science Fiction Convention (NASFiC).
Among these awards were the First Fandom awards. The Hall of Fame Award went to Algis Budrys, and the Sam Moskowitz Archive Award was given, posthumously, to Don Daily.
DucKon presented the Golden Duck Awards for excellence in children’s science fiction. The winner of the Picture Book award was Night of the Homework Zombies by Scott Nickel, illustrated by Steve Harpster. The winner of the Middle Grades award is Apers by Mike Jansen and Barbara Day Zincola. The Young Adult awards went to Rash by Pete Hautman. There was a Special Award presented to Write Your Own Science Fiction Story by Tish Farrel.
And the Sidewise Awards for Alternate History were presented (the nominees were announced in this article). The winner of the Short Form award was “Counterfactual” by Gardner Dozois (originally published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, June 2006). The Long Form award winner was the trilogy comprised of The Family Trade, The Hidden Family, and The Clan Corporate by Charles Stross (published by Tor Books).
The MidAmerican Fan Photo Archive has many photos of the convention.
