In conjunction with the recently concluded Robert A. Heinlein Centennial Convention, there was a short story contest. The winners were announced at the convention.
Stories were judged with an eye to selecting “short works of fiction that met the usual standards of literary excellence while representing the qualities that distinguish Robert Heinlein’s fiction.”
There were two categories—Amateur and Professional—each of which carried a $175 prize for the winner and a $75 prize for the honorable mention. In both categories, the judges found one other story that rose above the rest. The six winning stories are available in a pdf anthology for a limited time only. The file will be removed on 7 August 2007, so if you’re interested, take a look now.
The winners are:
Professional Category:
Winner: “The Beautiful Accident” by Edward Carmien
Honorable Mention: “Refuse” by Marjorie Dieter Keyishian
Special Recognition: “B All U Cn B” by Fran Van Cleave
Amateur Category:
Winner: “Hammers and Snails” by Christopher J. Howard
Honorable Mention: “A Condition of Intelligence” by Robert Jenkins
Special Recognition: “World Ceres” by Sandy Sandfort
Again, the pdf anthology is available from now until 7 August 2007, at this link.
