Author Michael Bishop‘s son, Christopher J. “Jamie” Bishop was one of those shot to death at Virginia Tech on 16 April.
The younger Bishop, 35, was a German professor. He was shot while teaching his class. According to the Los Angeles Times, he “wore his hair long, rode his bike to campus and worked alongside his wife, Stephanie Hofer, in the foreign languages department at Virginia Tech,” and that he “was known for his gentle manner and generosity toward students.”
CNN reports that Bishop earned his BA and MA in German, and was a Fulbright scholar at Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany. “According to his Web site, Bishop spent four years living in Germany, where he ‘spent most of his time learning the language, teaching English, drinking large quantities of wheat beer, and wooing a certain fraulein.'” That “fraulein” became his wife.
The Roanoke Times has posted a nice article on Bishop.
His own web site is at www.memory39.com.
The elder Bishop’s web site has posted the following: “It is with the deepest sorrow that we inform you that Michael’s son, Jamie Bishop, died on the campus of Virginia Tech. Please keep Mike, Jeri and their family in your thoughts and prayers in their time of grief.”
