Octavia E. Butler Tribute in Seattle, Washington

The Washington Center for the Book is hosting “A Tribute to Octavia E. Butler with Nalo Hopkinson and Friends,” at the Seattle Public Library’s Central Branch on 1 March at 7PM. This program is free and open to the public. Parking in the Central Library garage will be available for a $5 special event rate. Doors will open at 6:30PM.
The event will feature readings from Butler’s works, including her last novel, Fledgling.
Butler (1947-2006) was the first black woman to come to international prominence as a science fiction writer. Her main themes included race, gender, religion, poverty, power, politics, and science. She received numerous awards, including a MacArthur “genius” grant, the Hugo and Nebula awards, the Langston Hughes Medal, and a PEN Lifetime Achievement Award. She moved to Seattle in 1999.
Scheduled readers include: actor and director Timeca Briggs; author Nalo Hopkinson; Clarion West executive director Leslie Howle (who will present a slide show); Seattle Times columnist Jerry Large; author Vonda N. McIntyre; and author Nisi Shawl.
