The Washington Center for the Book is hosting “A Tribute to Octavia E. Butler with Nalo Hopkinson and Friends,” at the Seattle Public Library’s Central Branch on 1 March at 7PM. This program is free and open to the public. Parking in the Central Library garage will be available for a $5 special event rate. Doors will open at 6:30PM.
The event will feature readings from Butler’s works, including her last novel, Fledgling.
Butler (1947-2006) was the first black woman to come to international prominence as a science fiction writer. Her main themes included race, gender, religion, poverty, power, politics, and science. She received numerous awards, including a MacArthur “genius” grant, the Hugo and Nebula awards, the Langston Hughes Medal, and a PEN Lifetime Achievement Award. She moved to Seattle in 1999.
