The nominees for the 86th annual Academy Awards were announced this morning. American Hustle and Gravity topped the list, with 10 nominations each. The 9 feature-length genre films with nominations are five fewer than last year’s 14, and the total number of nominations (23) is only 60% of last year’s total.
Once again, there are nine nominees for Best Picture, and only one of them falls into the wider sf/f/h realm (though it wasn’t promoted as such at the box office): Gravity. Last year, there were two stealth sf nominees: Argo and Life of Pi.
Nominees of genre interest include:
The Croods: Animated Feature Film
Despicable Me 2: Animated Feature Film; Original Song (“Happy”)
Ernest & Celestine: Animated Feature Film
Frozen: Animated Feature Film; Original Song (“Let It Go”)
Gravity: Best Picture; Actress in a Leading Role (Sandra Bullock); Cinematography; Directing; Film Editing; Music (Original Score); Production Design; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing; Visual Effects

The full list of nominees is on this page. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — the organization which gives out the Oscars — has announced that Ellen DeGeneres will host the award show on Sunday 2 March at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and that it will be televised live on ABC.
