Photos from a 1981 New York reception for James White

img017-XLMoshe Feder writes: “When James White was GoH at Lunacon in 1981, I organized a party for him and Peggy at Peter de Jong’s apartment in midtown Manhattan. Peter, who has now lived in Seattle for many years, recently found and has now scanned pictures taken at the party — we’re not sure by whom — and they’re great.”

Andrew Porter adds: “Remember when James White was GoH at Lunacon in 1981? I organized a party for him and Peggy at Peter de Jong’s apartment in midtown. Peter has now found and scanned pictures taken at the party — we’re not sure by whom — and they’re great.”

— Andrew Porter (who remembers when his beard really was that color, his hair that long, his waist that fat)

James White (1928-99) was born in Northern Ireland, co-published the fanzines Slant and Hyphen with Walt Willis, and went on to write the Sector General novels, as well as nine others appearing between the 1950s and 1990s. His work garnered one Nebula and three Hugo nominations.

Interzone and BSFA co-sponsor the James White Award, named for him, which was established in 2000, and honors non-professional short story writers.
