New York fan group petitions to light up Empire State Building Dr. Who Blue

600_286853872Fan group New York SciFi & Fantasy has decided that the real world ought to recognize a real-world achievement by a science fictional staple. Specifically, this year is the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, and to recognize that achievement, the group has launched a “Petition to light up the Empire State Building TARDIS blue on November 23rd to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who!” Explaining their reasoning on Petition.org, the group writes “This is the first time a SciFi show has lasted 50 years. It’s a landmark occasion.

“The Doctor has visited NYC many times over the years, most recently earlier this season. Now NYSciFi & Fantasy wants to bring NYC to The Doctor to celebrate!

“We are attempting to partner with the Empire State Building (www.esbnyc.com) to make this happen (all official paperwork was submitted to the Empire State Building on 9/23/13).  Help show just how popular this show is by signing the petition and sharing the link.”

Upon reaching the 12,000-signature mark, they updated “we’ll get an answer one way or the other by November 9th, 1 fortnight prior to the 50th anniversary, so the more signatures we can accumulate by then, the better. 10,000 is a landmark number, but there’s still time to keep this going!”

At press time, the petition has 14,678 signatures.
