Paul Levinson (among others) reports the impending demise of Fictionwise, the ebook seller specializing in short fiction that launched in Summer 2000. Purchased by Barnes and Noble in 2009, the site seems doomed either by the success of BN.com and Amazon.com, or by the growing movement among authors to give away their short work in the hopes that it acts as “promotion” for their books, or simply by the contraction of ebook formats (Fictionwise was known for offering its fiction in a wide array of formats). Whichever way, Fictionwise will stop selling short fiction on December 4th, and “customers will not be able to access Fictionwise Bookshelves through the site after December 21, 2012.”
