Comics artist Marcus “Marc” Swayze died 14 October 2012. Born 17 July 1913 in Monroe, Louisiana, he is remembered for drawing Captain Marvel in 1941 and 1942.
According to his obituary in the News-Star, comics publisher Fawcett “was looking for an artist to contribute to its newly created comic book WHIZ Comics. Swayze sent sketches of his work to Fawcett and ‘they said, “come for an interview and be prepared to stay,”‘ Swayze recalled in the interview.”
Swayze worked for Fawcett from 1941 to 1952, with odd pieces of time. Following US entry into World War II, he was drafted into the Army, and stationed at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. While there, he continued writing scripts for Captain Marvel. After leaving the service in 1944, Swayze decided he wanted to return home to Louisiana, and managed to keep working for Fawcett on a freelance basis.
In addition to drawing Captain Marvel, he was the first to draw Mary Marvel. Mary, Billy’s long lost sister, could also gain super powers by saying “SHAZAM!”
Swazye also drew The Phantom Eagle for Fawcett and Flyin’ Jenny for newspapers.
Swayze was also an oil painter and former semi-pro league baseball player, Swayze wrote a column containing his professional memoirs, “We Didn’t Know It was the Golden Age”, for Alter Ego magazine, from 1996.
