Top Box Office Grossers: First Week in August 2012

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 3-9 August 2012. The Dark Knight Rises held onto the #1 spot for a third week, raising $52.4 million, for a three-week total of $370.6 million. The Total Recall remake opened at #2, recalling $36.1 million. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days opened at #3. Ice Age: Continental Drift slipped from #2 to #4, melting $13.9 million, for a four-week total of $137.3 million. The Watch slipped from #3 to #5, defending $10.2 million, for a two-week total of $29.2 million. Ted slipped from #5 to #7, bearing up $8.7 million, for a six-week total of $206.6 million. The Amazing Spider-Man slipped from #6 to #8, spinning up $7.0 million, for a five-week total of $253.3 million. Brave slipped from #7 to #9, earning $5.0 million, for a seven-week total of $225.4 million.
Madagascar 3 fell from #12 to #17, making $1.0 million, for a nine-week total of $211.3 million. The Hunger Games fell from #16 to #20, fighting up $700 thousand, for a twenty-week total of $407.0 million. The Avengers fell from #17 to #21, earning $650 thousand, for a fourteen-week total of $617.0 million. Men in Black 3, which fell out of the top 25 two weeks ago, this week pops back into sight at #22, neuralizing $650 thousand, for an eleven-week total of $176.6 million. Snow White and the Huntsman fell from #19 to #24, charming up $500 thousand, for a ten-week total of $154.0 million.
