Top Box Office Grossers: End of July 2012

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 20-26 July 2012. Even with the negative publicity surrounding the horror in Colorado, the latest Batman reboot, The Dark Knight Rises, rose high over everything else in the theatres, opening at #1 and raising $225.0 million. Ice Age: Continental Drift slipped from #1 to #2, melting $33.1 million, for a two-week total of $101.5 million. The Amazing Spider-Man slipped from #2 to #3, spinning up $17.5 million, for a three-week total of $235.3 million. Ted slipped from #3 to #4, bearing up $15.8 million, for a four-week total of $186.3 million. Brave slipped from #4 to #5, earning $10.3 million, for a five-week total of $213.0 million. Madagascar 3 slipped from #9 to #10, making $2.4 million, for a seven-week total of $208.7 million.
Dark Shadows, which last week fell out of the top 25, surged this week with more engagements, and climbed to #13 on the charts, vamping up $1.7 million, for an eleven-week total of $79.1 million. The Avengers fell from #12 to #15, earning $1.0 million, for a twelve-week total of $615.5 million. Snow White and the Huntsman fell from #13 to #16, charming up $700 thousand, for an eight-week total of $152.9 million. Prometheus fell from #14 to #18, thrilling up $500 thousand, for a seven-week total of $125.3 million. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter fell from #18 to #23, freeing $300 thousand, for a five-week total of $36.6 million. The Hunger Games climbed from #25 to #24, fighting up $300 thousand, for an eighteen-week total of $405.4 million.

Men in Black 3 (last week’s #15) in its ninth week in release (box office total: $175.5 million)


For the following week, 27 July-2 August, the box office reports go as follows: The Dark Knight Rises held onto the #1 spot for a second week, raising $93.2 million, for a two-week total of $318.2 million. Ice Age: Continental Drift held steady at #2, melting $21.9 million, for a three-week total of $123.5 million. Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, and Jonah Hill’s new comedy alien invasion film The Watch opened at #3, defending $19.0 million. Dance film Step Up Revolution opened at #4. Ted slipped from #4 to #5, bearing up $11.7 million, for a five-week total of $197.9 million. The Amazing Spider-Man fell from #3 to #6, spinning up $11.1 million, for a four-week total of $246.3 million. Brave slipped from #5 to #7, earning $7.4 million, for a six-week total of $220.4 million.
Madagascar 3 slipped from #10 to #12, making $1.6 million, for an eight-week total of $210.3 million. The Hunger Games climbed from #24 to #16, fighting up $900 thousand (three times as much as last week), for a nineteen-week total of $406.3 million. The Avengers slipped from #15 to #17, earning $850 thousand, for a thirteen-week total of $616.4 million. Snow White and the Huntsman fell from #16 to #19, charming up $650 thousand, for a nine-week total of $153.5 million.
