Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 8-14 June 2012. Welcome to summer: a new animated sequel opens, and we have a new box office leader. Madagascar 3 opened at the top of the charts, making $85.0 million. Ridley Scott’s Prometheus opened at #2, thrilling up $68.7 million. Snow White and the Huntsman slipped from #1 to #3, charming up $33.3 million, for a two-week total of $108.8 million. Men in Black 3 slipped from #2 to #4, neuralizing $20.7 million, for a three-week total of $142.7 million. The Avengers slipped from #3 to #5, earning $16.8 million, for a six-week total of $577.9 million. Battleship fell from #4 to #9, battling up $3.6 million, for a four-week total of $60.9 million.
Dark Shadows fell from #8 to #11, vamping up $2.2 million, for a five-week total of $74.5 million. The Hunger Games slipped from #11 to #12, fighting up $1.7 million, for a twelve-week total of $400.9 million. Chernobyl Diaries fell from #9 to #14, blowing up $1.3 million, for a three-week total of $17.5 million. Mirror Mirror slipped from #17 to #18, magicking up $550 thousand, for an eleven-week total of $63.7 million. The Lorax slipped from #16 to #18, greening up $550 thousand, for a fourteen-week total of $211.7 million.
