Top Box Office Grossers: Fourth Week in May 2012

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 25-31 May 2012. Apparently, it takes the third film in a blockbusting trilogy to dethrone a movie that had four precursor films as marketing. Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones (and Mr. Brolin, too) in Men in Black 3 opened at the top of the charts, neuralizing $83.0 million in its first week in release. The Avengers slipped from #1 to #2, earning $55.8 million, for a four-week total of $532.5 million. Battleship slipped from #2 to #3, battling up $16.8 million, for a two-week total of $50.3 million. Dark Shadows slipped from #4 to #5, vamping up $11.5 million, for a three-week total of $67.0 million. Nuclear horror fest Chernobyl Diaries opened at #6, blowing up $11.4 million. The Hunger Games slipped from #7 to #9, fighting up $3.8 million, for a ten-week total of $396.8 million.
The Pirates! Band of Misfits slipped from #10 to #11, swashbuckling up $1.7 million, for a five-week total of $27.9 million. Wes Anderson’s new Moonrise Kingdom opened at #14. Mirror Mirror climbed from #19 to #15, magicking up $800 thousand (fifty percent more than last week), for a nine-week total of $62.5 million. The Lorax slipped from #15 to #16, greening up $800 thousand (20% more than last week), for a thirteen-week total of $211.1 million. Wrath of the Titans fell from #14 to #22, grossing $350 thousand, for a nine-week total of $83.1 million. John Carter slipped from #22 to #23, adventuring up $350 thousand, for a twelve-week total of $72.6 million. The Cabin in the Woods fell from #17 to #24, grossing $300 thousand, for a seven-week total of $41.1 million. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which last week fell out of the top 25, this week rebounded to #25, adventuring up $300 thousand, for a sixteen-week total of $103.2 million.
