Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 11-17 May 2012. Only two weeks? Of course The Avengers is still dominating the charts. In the film’s second week at #1, it earned $132.0 million, for a two-week total of $402.0 million. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s wacky soap opera-to-film collaboration, Dark Shadows, opened at #2, vamping up $38.1 million. In pre-opening action, comedy The Dictator wound up at #4. The Hunger Games slipped from #3 to #5, fighting up $6.1 million, for an eight-week total of $388.6 million. The Pirates! Band of Misfits slipped from #6 to #8, swashbuckling up $4.0 million, for a three-week total of $23.9 million.
The Raven fell from #8 to #12, screaming up $2.0 million, for a three-week total of $15.3 million. Comedy Girl in Progress opened at #13. The Cabin in the Woods fell from #10 to #14, grossing $1.4 million, for a five-week total of $40.2 million. John Carter fell from #12 to #17, adventuring up $850 thousand, for a ten-week total of $71.8 million. Mirror Mirror slipped from #16 to #18, magicking up $750 thousand, for a seven-week total of $61.1 million. The Lorax slipped from #18 to #20, greening up $550 thousand (just as much as last week), for an eleven-week total of $209.7 million. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island held steady at #23, actioning up $300 thousand, for a fourteen-week total of $102.7 million.
