Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 16-22 March 2012. Television-to-movie action/comedy remake 21 Jump Street jumped to open at the top of the charts. The Lorax slipped from #1 to #2, greening up $28.6 million, for a three-week total of $164.2 million. John Carter slipped from #2 to #3, earning $17.7 million, for a two-week total of $57.3 million. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island held steady at #8, actioning up $3.2 million, for a six-week total of $95.8 million.
Will Ferrell’s new comedy Casa de Mi Padre opened at #11. Silent House fell from #5 to #12, spooking up $2.8 million, for a two-week total of $11.3 million. Comedy Jeff, Who Lives at Home opened at #16. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance fell from #13 to #17, burning up $1.1 million, for a five-week total of $50.0 million. Hugo climbed from #20 to #19, clocking in $700 thousand, for a seventeen-week total of $73.2 million. Chronicle fell from #16 to #20, making $650 thousand, for a seven-week total of $63.3 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked slipped from #24 to #25, singing up $400 thousand, for a fourteen-week total of $131.8 million.
