Top Box Office Grossers: Fifth Week in January 2012

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 27 January-2 February 2012. Liam Neeson’s new action flick The Grey opened at the top of the charts. Underworld Awakening slipped from #1 to #2, sucking up $16.1 million, for a two-week total of $48.8 million. Comedy-crime offering One for the Money opened at #3, with thriller Man on a Ledge opening at #5. Beauty and the Beast slipped from #6 to #9, dancing up $6.5 million, for a three-week total of $42.3 million.
Hugo climbed from #20 to #15, clocking in $3.2 million (more than twice what it earned last week), for a ten-week total of $59.6 million. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows fell from #9 to #16, deducing $3.1 million, for a seven-week total of $182.9 million. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo fell from #11 to #17, seeking out $2.9 million, for a six-week total of $98.9 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked fell from #14 to #19, singing up $2.0 million, for a seven-week total of $127.3 million. The Adventures of Tintin slipped from #18 to #21, adventuring up $1.7 million, for a six-week total of $74.6 million. The Devil Inside fell from #16 to #25, exorcising $850 thousand, for a four-week total of $52.9 million.

Happy Feet 2 (last week’s #22) in its eleventh week in release (box office total: $63.2 million.
Puss In Boots (last week’s #24) in its fourteenth week in release (box office total: $148.2 million)
