Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 18-24 November 2011. The newest film installment in the Twilight saga, Breaking Dawn ate up the competition, opening at the top of the charts, devouring $179.3 million. Animated sequel Happy Feet 2 opened at #2, dancing up $30.4 million. Puss In Boots slipped from #3 to #4, swashbuckling up $16.3 million, for a four-week total of $127.9 million. Immortals fell from #1 to #5, taking in $15.4 million, for a two-week total of $56.1 million. The newest outing of those wonderful puppets, The Muppets opened on the 23rd, yet still managed to earn $12.5 million, good enough for #6 on the charts. Arthur Christmas opened on the 23rd, and wound up at #10.
Martin Scorsese’s semi-steampunk family film Hugo opened on the 23rd, ratcheting up $4.0 million, which was good for #11 on the charts. George Clooney’s The Descendants opened at #12. In Time slipped from #7 to #13, saving $2.6 million, for a four-week total of $34.3 million. Paranormal Activity 3 slipped from #8 to #14, scaring up $1.4 million, for a five-week total of $103.0 million. Real Steel fell from #10 to #18, fighting up $700 thousand, for a seven-week total of $82.7 million.
