Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 7-13 October 2011. Disney’s robot-action flick Real Steel topped the charts, fighting up $35.4 million. Political drama The Ides of March opened at #2. The Lion King fell from #3 to #7, roaring up $6.3 million, for a four-week total of $87.7 million. Contagion held steady at #10, sneezing up $4.1 million, for a five-week total of $70.2 million.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II jumped up the charts (on 60% more screens than last week), climbing from #25 to #16, conjuring up $600 thousand (50% more than last week), for a thirteen-week total of $380.0 million. The Smurfs, which last week fell out of the top 25, this week rebounded to #17, smurfing up $500 thousand, for an eleven-week total of $139.4 million. Captain America: The First Avenger slipped from #17 to #18, commanding $450 thousand, for a twelve-week total of $175.9 million. Rise of the Planet of the Apes fell from #15 to #19, turning over $450 thousand, for a ten-week total of $175.1 million. Cars 2 climbed from #21 to #20, revving up $400 thousand, for a sixteen-week total of $190.6 million. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World slipped from #23 to #24, seeking out $250 thousand, for an eight-week total of $37.8 million.
