A press release from Kelly Ward of Inhabit Media:
Just in time for Halloween, Inhabit Media is sending dozens of cold, creepy Canadian monsters down south. Starting October 17, a window display at Canada’s oldest sci-fi/fantasy bookstore, Bakka Phoenix, will feature six spine-chilling titles divided into children’s, academic and adult categories. The titles, based on monster myths told by Inuit elders and illustrated by the world’s top fantasy artists, are now available online at chapters.indigo.ca, amazon.ca, and at select bookstores near you. Inhabit Media is Nunavut’s first independent publisher.
“Traditionally Inuit stories were told for entertainment, but today their re-telling is crucial to sustaining Inuit traditions and culture,” said Louise Flaherty, Inhabit Media co-founder. “As part of our 2011 Canadian Monsters promotion, Inhabit Media is launching three new titles that will bring traditional Inuit knowledge to the world in a spectacularly spooky way.”
Included in the 2011 Canadian Monsters promotion are three brand-new Inhabit titles:
The Shadows that Rush Past: A Collection of Frightening Inuit Folktales written by Rachel A. Qitsualik, illustrated by Emily Fiegenschuh and Larry MacDougall (42 pages, $13.95, ISBN: 978-1-926569-46-8)
Ajjit: Dark Dreams of the Ancient Arctic written by Sean A. Tinsley and Rachel A. Qitsualik, illustrated by Andrew Trabbold (200 pages, $14.95, ISBN: 978-1-926569-30-7)
The Legend of the Fog written by Qaunaq Mikkigak & Joanne Schwartz, illustrated by Danny Christopher (32 pages, $13.95, ISBN: 978-1-926569-45-1)
Other titles include a compendium of terrifying Arctic giants as well as Inuit legends re-imagined for modern audiences.
Since 2006, Inhabit Media has aimed to share Inuit knowledge through a variety of textbooks, children’s picture books, art books, mythology, wildlife titles, and magazines. The company’s Canadian Monsters promotion is the company’s first annual effort aimed at educating North Americans in the rich spiritual knowledge and mythology that is disappearing with Nunavut’s last generation of elders.
A synopsis of each book featured in the Canadian Monsters promotion can be found at www.inhabitmedia.com/books.html.
