Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 26 August-1 September 2011. It was a fairly quiet week at the box office (apparently Labor Day is a non-movie holiday weekend). Action-flick Colombiana opened at #2. Rise of the Planet of the Apes slipped from #2 to #3, turning over $12.4 million, for a four-week total of $152.2 million. Gullermo del Toro’s horror film Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (with Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce) opened at #4, claiming $11.4 million. Comedy Our Idiot Brother opened at #5. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World slipped from #3 to #6, seeking out $8.4 million, for a two-week total of $24.4 million. The Smurfs slipped from #5 to #7, smurfing up $6.8 million, for a five-week total of $128.0 million. Conan the Barbarian fell from #4 to #8, slaying $4.7 million, for a two-week total of $18.2 million. Fright Night slipped from #6 to #9, sucking up $4.6 million, for a two-week total of $15.8 million.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II slipped from #11 to #12, conjuring up $3.9 million, for a seven-week total of $372.2 million. Final Destination 5 fell from #7 to #14, scaring up $3.7 million, for a three-week total of $39.0 million. Cowboys & Aliens slipped from #13 to #15, rounding up $3.2 million, for a five-week total of $94.4 million. Captain America: The First Avenger fell from #12 to #16, commanding $3.2 million, for a six-week total of $169.7 million. Transformers: Dark of the Moon fell from #18 to #22, transforming $950 thousand (a shade more than last week), for a nine-week total of $349.8 million. Super 8, which fell out of the top 25 three weeks ago, this week returned to #24, making $450 thousand, for a twelve-week total of $126.2 million.
