William H. Patterson undergoes foot amputation

60-year-old author, biographer, and recent Hugo Award nominee William H. Patterson, Jr. reports “As is probably well known by now, [the Robert A. Heinlein biography] Learning Curve did not win the Hugo Award at Renovation this year, losing to Chicks Dig Time Lords. Unfortunately I was already ill with what turned into a full-blown attack of Diabetic Ketoacidosis, so I did not participate in any of the festivities and went into the hospital as soon as I got home (and had a transmetatarsal foot amputation).”
