Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 12-18 August 2011. Period drama The Help topped the charts this week. Rise of the Planet of the Apes slipped from #1 to #2, turning over $40.1 million, for a two-week total of $117.5 million. Final Destination 5 opened at #3, scaring up $24.6 million. The Smurfs slipped from #2 to #4, smurfing up $21.7 million, for a three-week total of $109.7 million. Action flick 30 Minutes or Less opened at #5. Cowboys & Aliens slipped from #3 to #6, rounding up $11.4 million, for a three-week total of $85.3 million. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II slipped from #6 to #7, conjuring up $11.4 million, for a five-week total of $361.5 million. Captain America: The First Avenger fell from #4 to #9, commanding $10.9 million, for a four-week total of $160.6 million.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon slipped from #11 to #14, transforming $2.0 million, for a seven-week total of $347.9 million. Cars 2 fell from #13 to #17, revving up $1.1 million, for an eight-week total of $186.6 million. Winnie the Pooh fell from #15 to #19, finding $650 thousand, for a five-week total of $25.5 million. Green Lantern, which fell out of the top 25 two weeks ago, this week climbed back up to #20, shining up $650 thousand, for a nine-week total of $115.3 million. Kung Fu Panda 2 fell from #16 to #22, kicking up $600 thousand, for a twelve-week total of $163.7 million. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides fell from #19 to #24, discovering another $550 thousand, for a thirteen-week total of $239.9 million.
