Top Box Office Grossers: Second Week in August 2011

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 5-11 August 2011. The new, special-effects laden entry in the film series launched by Pierre Boulle’s book is on top. Rise of the Planet of the Apes turned over $77.4 million in its first week in release. The Smurfs slipped from #1 to #2, smurfing up $32.8 million, for a two-week total of $88.0 million. Cowboys & Aliens slipped from #2 to #3, rounding up $22.2 million, for a two-week total of $73.9 million. Captain America: The First Avenger slipped from #3 to #4, commanding $19.6 million, for a three-week total of $149.8 million. Body-switch comedy The Change-Up opened at #5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II slipped from #4 to #6, conjuring up $19.4 million, for a four-week total of $350.1 million. Period drama The Help opened on the 10th, but still managed to find itself at #8 on the charts.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon slipped from #8 to #11, transforming $4.7 million, for a six-week total of $345.9 million. Cars 2 slipped from #10 to #13, revving up $2.0 million, for a seven-week total of $185.5 million. Winnie the Pooh fell from #11 to #15, finding $1.3 million, for a four-week total of $24.9 million. Kung Fu Panda 2 slipped from #15 to #16, kicking up $900 thousand, for an eleven-week total of $163.1 million. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, on 60% more screens than last week (making two weeks in a row of more viewing opportunities) climbed from #25 to #19 slot, discovering another $750 thousand (more than twice last week’s box office take), for a twelve-week total of $239.3 million. X-Men: First Class held steady at #21, earning $575 thousand (15% more than last week), for a ten-week total of $145.5 million.
