The finalists for this year’s Endeavour Award—for “a distinguished science fiction or fantasy book written by a Pacific Northwest author or authors and published in the previous year”—have been announced. The winner, who will receive a $1000 grant, will be named at OryCon in Portland, Oregon, this November.
This year’s finalists are:
Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs
The Bards of Bone Plain by Patricia McKillip
A Cup of Normal by Devon Monk
Dreadnought by Cherie Priest
Black Prism by Brent Weeks
The Endeavour Award is sponsored by Oregon Science Fiction Conventions, Inc., and “represents a collaboration between writers and fans of science fiction and fantasy to encourage the growth of literature in the field and recognize works of excellence. It is named for H.M. Bark Endeavour, the ship of Northwest explorer Capt. James Cook.” This year’s judges are John Joseph Adams, Bud Sparhawk, and Jo Walton.
WOW!! Black Prism by Brent Weeks should win this award. OK, I have yet to read the other books, but Black Prism is SO FRIGGIN’ GOOD!! Not only should he be scooping up awards, but Hollywood should be bangin’ down his door to get this thing optioned…into a movie.
If you haven’t read it, it’s a great summer read. It’s orignal, and the character development is rich, and the world-building is perfect. You can completely visualize this story as you read it. 5 outa 5 stars.
