In addition to the issue-specific stories, IGMS offers its regular selection of columns, mostly opinion pieces.
In an unexpected, and unplanned, move, this is a special Writers of the Future-themed issue of the magazine. After being notified separately that their stories would be appearing in this issue, authors Prater, Rimar, Roberts, and Stone realized this was a reunion of authors who appeared six years ago, in the 2005 issue of the contest’s annual anthology, Writers of the Future XXI.
Fiction Editor Edmund Schubert tells SFScope, “the authors were the ones who realized what was going on, and asked to run with it.”
Roberts said “I noticed that we’d all mentioned stories coming out in the same issue and joked that we should call it a reunion.”
In a press release, Schubert said “We regularly receive outstanding submissions from prior winners. What’s really odd is publishing so many from the same year in one issue. I wouldn’t be surprised if this turns out to be some kind of record.”
All four writers credit the Writers of the Future contest with fulfilling its mission of finding the next generation of science fiction and fantasy writers and giving their careers the extra momentum needed to continue writing and selling regularly.
