The nominees for the 31st annual Golden Raspberry Awards, popularly known as the Razzies, were announced today. The Razzies are “a logical antidote to Tinsel Town’s annual glut of self-congratulations [created] by John Wilson, author of Everything I Know I Learned at the Movies.” The awards ceremony—at which the organizers expect none of the nominees to appear (though they have been surprised in the past)—will be in the evening on Saturday 26 February at Barnsdall Gallery Theatre in Hollywood (as is traditional, the nominees were announced a day before the Academy Award nominees are to be announced, and the award ceremony will be the day before the Academy Awards).
In announcing the nominees, The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation said “2010 was a year when those obnoxious ‘surcharges’ for 3-D glasses boosted movie studios’ bottom lines, while actual attendance dropped once again. It was a year when most of what Hollywood released was either a remake, a ‘reboot’ a ‘re-imagining’… or an outright rip-off. In other words, it was a banner year for… the award show that dis-honors Worst Achievements in Film.”
Leading the pack among this year’s Razzie contenders are “repeat offender M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘re-imagined’ faux-anime TV series The Last Airbender” and “last year’s 4th biggest money-maker, Twilight Saga: Eclipse“, each of which earned nine nominations.
