Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 27 August-2 September 2010. New thriller Takers opened at #1. New horror flick The Last Exorcism opened at #2, grossing $24.8 million. Inception climbed this week, from #8 to #6, earning $6.9 million, for a seven-week total of $272.6 million. Vampires Suck fell from #3 to #7, sucking up $6.7 million, for a two-week total of $29.3 million. Nanny McPhee Returns slipped from #7 to #8, cleaning up $6.6 million, for a two-week total of $29.3 million. Piranha 3D (which we missed last week when it opened at #5), this week fell to #10, gobbling up $6.1 million, for a two-week total of $20.1 million.
James Cameron’s animated blockbuster Avatar, which apparently didn’t make enough money in its first run in the theatres, has been re-released in a slightly expanded version, exclusively in 3-D and IMAX theatres. The new Avatar opened at #11, and earned $5.5 million in this week. Combining it with the film’s previous earnings, it’s been on the charts for 37 weeks, and earned $755.3 million.
Despicable Me slipped from #11 to #13, grossing $4.0 million, for an eight-week total of $237.5 million. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World fell from #10 to #14, battling up $3.6 million, for a three-week total of $27.3 million. Toy Story 3 fell from #16 to #20, taking in $1.5 million, for an eleven-week total of $406.2 million. Cats & Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore fell from #15 to #21, woofing up $950 thousand, for a five-week total of $41.6 million. Twilight: Eclipse fell from #19 to #23, sucking up $750 thousand, for a nine-week total of $298.3 million. The Last Airbender, which last week fell out of the top 25, this week rebounded to #24, conjuring up $575 thousand, for a nine-week total of $130.7 million.
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, last week’s #25, fell out of the top 25, after seven weeks in release, generating $61.2 million.
