Top Box Office Grossers: Third Week in July 2010

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 16-22 July 2010. The new Christopher Nolan-Leonardo DiCaprio dream thriller Inception topped the charts, earning $100.2 million. Despicable Me slipped from #1 to #2, grossing $52.0 million, for a two-week total of $137.6 million. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, in its first full week in release, climbed from #9 to #3, generating $25.9 million, for a total box office take of $33.0 million. Twilight: Eclipse slipped from #2 to #4, where it sucked up $21.3 million, for a three-week total of $272.6 million. Toy Story 3 again proved strong, slipping only from #4 to #5, taking in $19.5 million, for a five-week total of $370.5 million. The Last Airbender slipped from #6 to #7, conjuring up $11.7 million, for a three-week total of $119.1 million. Predators fell from #3 to #8, grabbing $10.4 million, for a two-week total of $43.7 million.
Iron Man 2 came roaring back a bit, climbing from #19 to #14, and earning $950 thousand (50% more than last week), for an eleven-week total of $310.4 million. Marmaduke slipped from #18 to #19, woofing up $525 thousand, for a seven-week total of $32.3 million. Shrek Forever After fell from #14 to #21, grossing $500 thousand, for a nine-week total of $234.6 million. How to Train Your Dragon slipped from #21 to #23, swooping up $425 thousand, for a seventeen-week total of $217.6 million. Robin Hood clung to the #25 spot, redistributing $275 thousand, for a ten-week total of $104.9 million.
Falling out of the top 25 this week was Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (last week’s #23) in its eighth week in release, with a box office total of $89.4 million.
