Three years after launching Zudacomics.com, DC Comics is plugging the plug. The web comics imprint and submissions portal is being folded into DC’s “second step into the world of digital publishing [which is] the simultaneous launch of the official DC Comics iPhone/iPad App (powered by comiXology) and participation in Sony’s Playstation Network.”
Vice President of Creative Services Ron Perazza announced the shut-down on Zuda’s blog. All of DC’s electronically published comics will now come under the unified Digital Publishing initiative, and eventually, readers will “be able to read all of your digital editions and manage your entire library in one place, whether DCU, Vertigo, WildStorm or Zuda. The goal there is convergence of technology and convergence of editorial.”
Announcing the closure, Publishers Weekly noted there had been some “shortcomings” in Zuda’s competition format, among them, “accusations of cheating, confusion about the process, spamming in the name of promotion and argumentative, dismissive or even aggressive behavior.”
