Top Box Office Grossers: Second Week in March 2010

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 5-11 March 2010. Tim Burton’s new 3-D Alice in Wonderland topped the charts, conjuring up $146.6 million. That pushed Shutter Island down from #1 to #2, where it still took in $17.3 million, for a three-week total of $99.9 million. Cop film Brooklyn’s Finest opened at #3, and comedy cop film Cop Out slipped to #4. Which means Avatar showed some strength, slipping only from #4 to #5, grabbing $11.3 million, for a twelve-week total of $723.7 million. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief slipped from #5 to #7, making $6.3 million, for a four-week total of $79.2 million.
The Wolfman fell from #8 to #11, scaring up $2.2 million, for a four-week total of $61.0 million. Tooth Fairy fell from #9 to #12, earning $2.0 million, for a seven-week total of $56.4.6 million. The Book of Eli fell from #12 to #18, taking in $725 thousand, for an eight-week total of $93.6 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel held strong at #19, grossing $675 thousand (a 35% drop in box office from last week), for an eleven-week total of $217.5 million. Sherlock Holmes and held strong, at #20, earning $550 thousand (a 30% drop), for an eleven-week total of $207.2 million. The Princess and the Frog slipped from #22 to #25, and earned $400 thousand, for a fifteen-week total of $103.8 million.
Twilight: New Moon, last week’s #25, fell out of the top 25 this week, after sixteen weeks in the theatres, and $296.4 million.
