Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 19-25 March 2010. Alice in Wonderland held on to the top spot on the charts for its third straight week, conjuring up $44.6 million, for a three-week total of $275.8 million. (The Bounty Hunter and Diary of a Wimpy Kid opened respectively at numbers 2 and 3.) Repo Men opened at #5, repossessing $8.3 million. Shutter Island slipped from #4 to #7, where it took in $6.4 million, for a five-week total of $117.4 million. Avatar slipped only from #7 to #8, grabbing $5.5 million, for a fourteen-week total of $738.4 million.
Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief fell from #11 to #16, making $1.8 million, for a six-week total of $85.4 million. Sherlock Holmes actually climbed three spots, from #23 to #20, as it earned $575 thousand (80% more than last week), for a thirteen-week total of $208.1 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel resumed its downward progress, slipping from #18 to #21, grossing $500 thousand, for a thirteen-week total of $218.8 million. Tooth Fairy fell from #17 to #24, earning $350 thousand, for a nine-week total of $58.0 million.
The Wolfman, last week’s #20, fell out of the top 25 after six weeks in the theatres, and a box office total of $61.8 million.
The Princess and the Frog, last week’s #22, fell out of the top 25 after seventeen weeks, with a box office total of $104.3 million.
