Top Box Office Grossers: Fourth Week in February 2010

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 19-25 February 2010. The new Martin Scorsese/Leonardo DiCaprio dark thriller Shutter Island topped the charts, taking in $52.9 million in its first week. Avatar had a resurgence, rising from #4 to #2, grabbing $21.2 million (38% less than last week; the resurgence was due to three other films doing much worse this week), for a ten-week total of $692.9 million. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief slipped from #2 to #4, making $18.0 million, for a two-week total of $61.4 million. The Wolfman slipped from #3 to #5, scaring up $12.7 million, for a two-week total of $53.1 million. Tooth Fairy slipped only from #6 to #7, earning $5.0 million, for a five-week total of $50.4 million.
The Book of Eli held steady at #11, taking in $2.5 million, for a six-week total of $91.4 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel climbed from #17 to #15, grossing $1.1 million, for a nine-week total of $215.8 million. Sherlock Holmes held steady at #16, earning $1.1 million, for a nine-week total of $205.8 million. Legion fell from #14 to #18, grossing $850 thousand, for a five-week total of $39.4 million. The Princess and the Frog slipped from #19 to #21, and earned $700 thousand, for a thirteen-week total of $102.8 million. Twilight: New Moon slipped from #21 to #22, sucking in $500 thousand, for a fourteen-week total of $295.7 million.
The Lovely Bones, last week’s #20, fell out of the top 25 this week, after 11 weeks in the theatres and $43.4 million.
