Top Box Office Grossers: Third Week in February 2010

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 12-18 February 2010. Romantic comedy Valentine’s Day opened at the top of the charts. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief (based on Rick Riordan’s novel) opened at #2, making $43.5 million. Anthony Hopkins’s The Wolfman opened at #3, scaring up $40.5 million. Those three new movies pushed Avatar down from #2 to #4, where it still managed to grab $34.1 million, for a nine-week total of $671.7 million. Tooth Fairy slipped only from #5 to #6, earning $9.4 million (15% more than last week), for a four-week total of $45.4 million.
The Book of Eli fell from #7 to #11, taking in $4.9 million, for a five-week total of $88.9 million. Legion fell from #9 to #14, grossing $2.5 million, for a four-week total of $38.6 million. Sherlock Holmes fell from #10 to #16, earning $2.2 million, for an eight-week total of $204.7 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel slipped from #15 to #17, grossing $2.0 million, for an eight-week total of $214.6 million. The Princess and the Frog actually rose two spots, from #21 to #19, and earned just a hair under $1 million (75% more than last week), for a twelve-week total of $102.1 million. The Lovely Bones fell from #13 to #20, racking up $950 thousand, for a ten-week total of $43.1 million. After slipping out of the top 25 last week, Twilight: New Moon climbed back up to #21, sucking in $850 thousand, for a thirteen-week total of $295.2 million.
Daybreakers, last week’s #24, not only fell out of the top 25, but apparently completely closed this week. It was open five weeks, earning $30.1 million.
