Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 5-11 February 2010. Shock at the top! After nearly two months, a new film comes along to knock Avatar off the top of the charts. War/love story Dear John was tops at the box office this week. Avatar slipped from #1 to #2, grabbing $31.1 million, for an eight-week total of $637.6 million. Comic-fantasy Tooth Fairy showed some strength, slipping only from #4 to #5 (with From Paris with Love opening at #3), earning $8.1 million, for a three-week total of $35.9 million. The Book of Eli slipped from #5 to #7, taking in $6.6 million, for a four-week total of $84.0 million. Legion fell from #6 to #9, grossing $4.8 million, for a three-week total of $36.1 million. Sherlock Holmes slipped from #8 to #10, earning $3.5 million, for a seven-week total of $202.5 million.
The Lovely Bones fell from #7 to #13, racking up $2.9 million, for a nine-week total of $42.2 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel fell from #10 to #15, grossing $2.6 million, for a seven-week total of $212.6 million. The Princess and the Frog fell from #17 to #21, earning $575 thousand, for an eleven-week total of $101.1 million. Daybreakers fell from #18 to #24, bringing in $425 thousand, for a five-week total of $30.1 million.
Falling out of the top 25 this week were:
Twilight: New Moon (last week’s #22) in its twelfth week in release (total domestic box office: $294.4 million)
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (last week’s #23) in its seventh week in release ($6.9 million)
