Top Box Office Grossers: First Week in February 2010

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 29 January-4 February 2010. Once again, James Cameron’s animated Avatar owns the #1 spot (although it may show some movement downward next week, according to early numbers). This week, it grabbed $42.0 million, for a seven-week total of $606.5 million. New openers Edge of Darkness and When in Rome took the number 2 and 3 spots. Comic-fantasy Tooth Fairy showed some strength, maintaining its #4 position, earning $11.7 million, for a two-week total of $27.8 million. The Book of Eli slipped from #3 to #5, taking in $11.7 million, for a three-week total of $77.3 million. Legion fell from #2 to #6, grossing $9.4 million, for a two-week total of $31.3 million. The Lovely Bones slipped from #5 to #7, racking up $5.9 million, for an eight-week total of $39.2 million. Sherlock Holmes slipped from #6 to #8, taking in $5.9 million, for a six-week total of $198.9 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel slipped from #9 to #10, grossing $4.7 million, for a six-week total of $210.0 million.
The Princess and the Frog held steady at #17, earning $1.0 million, for a ten-week total of $100.6 million. Daybreakers fell from #14 to #18, bringing in $950 thousand, for a four-week total of $29.7 million. Twilight: New Moon slipped from #21 to #22, sucking in $600 thousand, for an eleven-week total of $294.0 million. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus slipped from #22 to #23, grossing $450 thousand, for a six-week total of $6.5 million.
