Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 15-21 January 2010. Finally, some movement near the top of the charts. But still, James Cameron’s animated Avatar continues to own the #1 spot, for the fifth straight week. This week, it grabbed $66.3 million, for a five-week total of $516.8 million. The Lovely Bones, which has been open only in extremely limited engagements for the last five weeks, this week jumped into wide release, and into the #3 position, racking up $22.4 million, for a six-week total of $22.8 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel slipped from #3 to #4, grossing $16.6 million, for a four-week total of $197.7 million. Sherlock Holmes finally got knocked out of its #2 spot, falling to #5, taking in $14.3 million, for a four-week total of $184.4 million.
Daybreakers fell from #4 to #11, bringing in $7.4 million, for a two-week total of $26.5 million. The Princess and the Frog fell from #10 to #13, earning $4.3 million, for an eight-week total of $97.8 million.
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus slipped from #11 to #14, grossing $1.6 million, for a four-week total of $5.4 million. Twilight: New Moon slipped from #14 to #15, sucking in $1.4 million, for a nine-week total of $292.7 million. 2012 returned to #23, after falling out of the top 25 last week, earning $550 thousand, for a ten-week total of $164.8 million.
Planet 51 returned to #24, after falling out of the top 25 in the last week in December. This week, it earned $525 thousand, for a nine-week total of $40.2 million.
