Top Box Office Grossers: Fourth Week in January 2010

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 22-28 January 2010. It’s getting almost tedious to say that James Cameron’s animated Avatar continues to own the #1 spot, for the sixth straight week. This week, it grabbed $47.7 million, for a six-week total of $564.5 million. Legion opened at #2, grossing $21.8 million. Tooth Fairy opened at #4, conjuring up $16.1 million. The Lovely Bones slipped from #3 to #5, racking up $10.5 million, for a seven-week total of $33.3 million. Sherlock Holmes slipped from #5 to #6, taking in $8.6 million, for a five-week total of $193.1 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel fell from #4 to #9, grossing $7.6 million, for a five-week total of $205.3 million.
Daybreakers slipped from #11 to #14, bringing in $2.2 million, for a three-week total of $28.7 million. The Princess and the Frog slipped from #13 to #17, earning $1.6 million, for a nine-week total of $99.6 million. Twilight: New Moon fell from #15 to #21, sucking in $700 thousand, for a ten-week total of $293.4 million. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus fell from #14 to #22, grossing $700 thousand, for a five-week total of $6.1 million.
Falling out of the top 25 this week (again, in both cases) were:
2012 (last week’s #23) in its eleventh week in release (total domestic box office: $165.2 million)
Planet 51 (last week’s #24) in its tenth week ($40.6 million)
