Top Box Office Grossers: Third Week in December 2009

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 18-24 December 2009. James Cameron’s animated sf tour-de-force Avatar smashed its way to the top of the charts, grabbing $137.3 million in its first week. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, which opened on the 23rd, still managed to claw its way to #2, nabbing $26.9 million in two days. The Princess and the Frog was pushed out of the top spot and down to #3, earning $22.1 million, for a four-week total of $54.7 million. Twilight: New Moon slipped from #4 to #7, sucking in $7.3 million, for a five-week total of $277.5 million. Disney’s A Christmas Carol fell from #5 to #9, earning $7.2 million, for a seven-week total of $134.6 million.
2012 fell from #7 to #12, grabbing $3.7 million, for a six-week total of $160.5 million. Planet 51 was down from #13 to #16, where it earned $1.4 million, for a five-week total of $39.1 million. Fantastic Mr. Fox fell from #14 to #17, nabbing $1.2 million, for a six-week total of $18.0 million. The Road slipped from #17 to #18, bringing in $1.1 million (30% more than last week), for a four-week total of $5.3 million.
The Men Who Stare at Goats (last week’s #21) fell out of the top 25 in its seventh week in release, having grossed $31.9 million.
