Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 27 November-3 December 2009. Once again, there was no surprise, as the second installment in the Twilight series, New Moon, held onto the #1 spot, sucking in $51.9 million, for a two-week total of $239.9 million. Sports filck The Blind Side held steady at #2. Disaster porn flick 2012 held onto the #3 spot, reaping $21.4 million, for a three-week total of $142.2 million. New comedy Old Dogs opened at #4. Disney’s animated A Christmas Carol, therefore, slipped from #4 to #5, scaring up $18.3 million, for a four-week total of $107.5 million. Ninja Assassin opened at #6, which forced Planet 51 from #5 to #7, where it earned $11.4 million, for a two-week total of $29.7 million. Fantastic Mr. Fox is now in wide release, and climbed from #10 to #9 this week, nabbing $8.1 million, for a three-week total of $11.2 million. Post-apocalyptic The Road (based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel and starring Viggo Mortenson) opened on 2 December, but still managed to find itself at #10 for the week, bringing in $2.4 million.
The Men Who Stare at Goats fell from #9 to #12, grossing $1.9 million, for a four-week total of $30.9 million. Disney’s The Princess and the Frog opened on more screens, but still isn’t nationwide (its official opening is 11 December). It earned $1.2 million, for a full week pre-opening total of $1.7 million. The Fourth Kind slipped from #16 to #19, grabbing $750 thousand, for a four-week total of $24.8 million. Paranormal Activity fell from #15 to #21, taking in $650 thousand, for a ten-week total of $107.3 million. Where the Wild Things Are fell from #17 to #23, earning $500 thousand, for a seven-week total of $75.5 million.
