ASIFA-Hollywood, the international animated film society, has announced the nominees for their 37th annual Annie Awards, honoring the best in animation. The awards ceremony, where they’ll be announcing the winners, will be held on Saturday 6 February 2010 at UCLA’s Royce Hall (Los Angeles, California). The Annies honor excellence in animation in many media, and though they’re not all sf/f/h productions, there’s a lot of cross-over on this list, so we’ve decided to include them all.
Concurrent with announcing the nominees, ASIFA-Hollywood announced the recipients of this year’s juried awards. The Winsor McCay Award goes to: Tim Burton, Bruce Timm, and Jeffrey Katzenberg (bios for all three, along with a list of previous winners of the award, are on this page). The Winsor McCay Award is given “in recognition of lifetime or career contributions to the art of animation in producing, directing, animating, design, writing, voice acting, sound and sound effects, technical work, music, professional teaching, or for other endeavors which exhibit outstanding contributions to excellence in animation.”
The June Foray Award, for “individuals who have made a significant and benevolent or charitable impact on the art and industry of animation”: Tom Sito (see this page).
The Ub Iwerks Award for “individuals or companies for technical advancements that make a significant impact on the art or industry of animation”: William T. Reeves (see this page).
The Special Achievement Award for “unique and outstanding achievement”: Martin Meunier and Brian McLean (see this page).
Certificates of Merit “for service to the art, craft, and industry of animation”: Myles Mikulic, Danny Young, and Michael Woodside (see this page).
