Luis Ortiz is putting together a book on artist Jack Gaughan (1930-85), so he’s looking for “any and all correspondence with or letters from Gaughan.” Publisher Nonstop Press has already scheduled Outermost: The Art & Life of Jack Gaughan for publication in March 2010.
Ortiz is the author of Arts Unknown: The Life & Art of Lee Brown Coye (2005), Emshwiller: Infinity x Two: The Life & Art of Ed & Carol Emshwiller (2007), and co-edited Cult Magazines: A to Z: A Compendium of Culturally Obsessive & Curiously Expressive Publications with Earl Kemp (which Nonstop released last month).
Gaughan painted covers mostly for Ace Books and DAW Books, and nearly all the art in Galaxy Magazine for five years. He won the Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist in 1967, 1968, and 1969, and the Hugo for Best Fan Artist in 1967 (yes, Pro and Fan in the same year). He also posthumously won the 2001 Retro Hugo for Best Fan Artist (given for work from the year 1950). ISFDB has an impressive list of his works on this page. You can also find a selection of his art work on this Google search.
