Top Box Office Grossers: Second Week of October 2009

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 9-15 October 2009. The new romantic comedy Couples Retreat took over the top spot, but sf/f/h genre films own the next five. Zombieland was pushed down from #1 to #2, gobbling up $20.2 million, for a two-week total of $53.0 million. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs therefore slipped from #2 to #3, but still took in $15.9 million, for a four-week total of $100.2 million. Paranormal Activity is again climbing, this week it’s up from #19 to #4, making $12.3 million, for a three-week total of $13.6 million. The Toy Story / Toy Story 2 re-release slipped from #3 to #5, earning $10.5 million, for a two-week total of $25.5 million. Surrogates slipped from #4 to #6, bringing in $6.0 million, for a three-week total of $34.4 million.
Pandorum fell from #12 to #16, scaring up $1.2 million, for a three-week total of $9.9 million. 9 slipped from #14 to #17, earning $1.2 million, for a five-week total of $31.0 million. GI Joe surged, climbing this week from #22 to #18, grossing just under $1.0 million (a 50% increase over last week), for a ten-week total of $149.2 million. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which fell out of the top 25 two weeks ago, this week returns to the #24 spot, conjuring up almost $600 thousand, for a thirteen-week total of $300.9 million.
Three genre films slipped out of the top 25: District 9 (last week’s #21) in its ninth week, The Final Destination (last week’s #24) in its seventh week, and Sorority Row (last week’s #25) in its fifth week.
