Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 2-8 October 2009. New horror-comedy Zombieland topped the charts, gobbling up $32.8 million. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs therefore dropped from #1 to #2, but still took in $18.6 million, for a three-week total of $84.3 million. The Toy Story / Toy Story 2 re-release grabbed the #3 position, earning $15.0 million. Giving Disney the #3 and #4 spots is Surrogates, which slipped from #2 to #4, bringing in $9.4 million, for a two-week total of $28.5 million.
Pandorum fell from #5 to #12, scaring up $2.8 million, for a two-week total of $8.7 million. Animated post-apocalyptic flick 9 fell from #9 to #14, earning $1.8 million, for a four-week total of $29.8 million. Horror flick Paranormal Activity opened small last week, and this week popped up to #19, making $975 thousand, for a two-week total of $1.2 million. District 9 was down from #14 to #21, grossing $650 thousand, for an eight-week total of $114.6 million. GI Joe was down from #16 to #22, bringing in $625 thousand, for a nine-week total of $148.3 million. The Final Destination fell from #13 to #24, taking in $575 thousand, for a six-week total of $65.6 million. Sorority Row fell from #15 to #25, grossing $500 thousand, for a four-week total of $11.5 million.
Gamer fell from #18 out of the top 25 in its fifth week in the theatres, while The Time Traveler’s Wife, last week’s #19, also fell out of the top 25, in its eighth week in release.
