Frank Vevle writes that he’s just opened a new website/community that focuses on reviewing science fiction and fantasy books. Called Vision SciFi, its “aim is book reviews and a community site for all readers who are into sci-fi and fantasy literature. I have built a rather complex review system that gives the reviewer more specific input and scoring when reviewing a book.”
In addition to reviews, the community aspects include a discussion forum and blogs. “The community site is very similar to Facebook, and you can even use your Facebook ID to login and become a member at Visionscifi.”
Of himself, Vevle says he’s been reading sf for thirty years, an average of one or two books a week. As to why he reads sf, he says “Mostly because it’s something totally different from what I am experiencing in real life. The chance to give myself away to ‘another universe’. It’s almost like meditating. Time goes by, and it’s just me and the book.” He also says “the speculative novel has changed over the years, and I think it’s done so for the better. The classic two-dimensional characters have been given a new life through more ‘modern’ story telling. The heroes/heroines are behaving more as adults then as big children, and it’s time to read about more then a trip over the mountain to find the golden goose.”
In addition to running the site himself, he’s looking for some volunteers, “because there are so many good novels published and so little time to give them a review.” The site has just launched, so it still seems sparsely populated, but Vevle seems to be working hard.
