Top Box Office Grossers: Fifth Week of August

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 28 August-3 September 2009. New horror release The Final Destination topped the charts, sucking in $35.2 million. Another new horror film opened at #3 (behind last week’s #1, Inglourious Basterds): Halloween II grossed $20.1 million. District 9 was pushed down from #2 to #4, taking in $14.1 million, for a three-week total of $94.3 million. GI Joe fell from #3 to #6, earning $9.9 million, for a four-week total of $134.3 million. The Time Traveler’s Wife was down from #4 to #7, bringing in $8.9 million, for a three-week total of $50.3 million. Shorts, which last week was #6 (we misreported its position as #1) this week slipped to #8, taking in another $5.7 million, for a two-week total of $14.4 million. G-Force fell from #7 to #10, grabbing $3.7 million, for a six-week total of $112.6 million.
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince fell from #8 to #11, bringing in $3.2 million, for a seven-week total of $295.0 million. Ponyo slipped from #12 to #13, earning $2.5 million, for a three-week US total of $11.6 million (it opened last year in Japan as Gake no ue no Ponyo). Up jumped back into the top 25, after falling out last week. This week, the animated adventure was #18, taking in $900 thousand, for a fourteen-week total of $289.9 million. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen slipped from #17 to #20, grossing $800 thousand, for a ten-week total of $399.6 million. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs climbed a spot this week, from #22 to #21, earning $700 thousand, for a nine-week total of $193.4 million. Aliens in the Attic also climbed a spot, from #23 to #22, grabbing $625 thousand, for a five-week total of $23.1 million. The Orphan fell from #21 to #24, grossing $500 thousand, for a six-week total of $40.7 million.
