Contrary to prior reports and assumptions (including our own review of the last episode aired in the US), The Futon Critic is quoting an ABC network spokesperson as confirming that the network has not canceled Defying Gravity. While the network has given no indication as to when the show might return, they are apparently still mulling over scheduling options. The ninth episode, “Eve Ate the Apple”, apparently was aired in Canada (according to a commenter on that previous review), but in the States, ABC chose instead to air the 2005 film King Kong against CBS’s Emmy Awards broadcast.
The Futon Critic notes that “due to its late start this summer, ABC didn’t have the real estate to air all 13 installments from its first season. Gravity‘s shortened run was made clear from the start: the network announced back on 22 July [that] Brothers & Sisters would return to its Sunday, 10:00/9:00c slot on 27 September, leaving Gravity just eight weeks of potential air dates.”
I really like Defying Gravity and hope that someone from ABC is reading this. Please! Keep this show on the air. I like the characters, the ship, the mystery, the Grand Tour idea. I look forward to seeing it and was disappointed that I had to settle for something else last night. If nothing else, please make sure all the episodes make it to Hulu. Do not abandon this show like so many others (Space Rangers, Firefly…) have been just as they were getting started.
