The British Fantasy Society announced the winners of their 2009 British Fantasy Awards this weekend at this year’s British Fantasy Convention, FantasyCon 2009, which was held in Nottingham, UK. As always, the awards are voted by the members of the BFS and members of this and last year’s FantasyCon.
In addition to the voted awards, other awards were given. The Sydney J. Bounds Award for Best Newcomer (selected by a panel of judges) went to Joseph D’Lacey for Meat (published by Bloody Books). The Karl Edward Wagner Special Award (selected by the BFS Committee) was given to Hayao Miyazaki. And the results of the BFS Short Story Competition 2009 were announced: Patrick Whittaker won for “Dead Astronauts”, while Elana Gomel was the runner up with “In the Moment”.

Best Novel (The August Derleth Fantasy Award): Memoirs of a Master Forger by Graham Joyce writing as William Heaney (Gollancz)
Best Novella: “The Reach of Children” by Tim Lebbon (Humdrumming)
Best Short Fiction: “Do You See” by Sarah Pinborough (Myth-Understandings, Newcon Press)
Best Collection: Bull Running for Girls by Allyson Bird (Screaming Dreams)
Best Anthology: The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror 19 edited by Stephen Jones (Constable & Robinson)
The PS Publishing Best Small Press Award: Elastic Press (Andrew Hook)
Best Artist: Vincent Chong (for various works)
Best Comic/Graphic Novel: Locke and Key written by Joe Hill, art by Gabriel Rodriguez (IDW Publishing)
Best Non-Fiction: Basil Copper: A Life in Books by Basil Copper, edited by Stephen Jones (PS Publishing)
Best Magazine/Periodical: Postscripts edited by Peter Crowther and Nick Gevers (PS Publishing)
Best Television: Doctor Who (BBC Wales)
Best Film: The Dark Knight directed by Christopher Nolan
