Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 17-23 July 2009. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, in its first full week in release, was a strong #1, earning $111.6 million, for a total box-office take of $191.8 million. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs held strong at #2, grossing $28.8 million, for a three-week total of $163.1 million. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen had a strong week, climbing from #4 to #3, and taking in $21.0 million, for a four-week box-office total of $371.1 million. Up also rose, from #9 to #8, taking in $5.6 million, for an eight-week total of $282.0 million.
Night at the Museum: Battle Smithsonian slipped from #12 to #13, grossing $1.3 million, for a nine-week total of $172.4 million. Star Trek slipped from #13 to #15, grossing $1.1 million, for an eleven-week total of $253.6 million. Moon held steady at #16, bringing in $850 thousand, for a six-week total of $3.0 million. Terminator Salvation was up from #22 to #20, earning $575 thousand (more than last week) for a nine-week total of $123.9 million. Angels & Demons, which last week fell out of the top 25, this week returned to the #23 spot, taking in another $425 thousand, for a ten-week total of $132.5 million. Land of the Lost was down from #20 to #24, earning $400 thousand, for a seven-week total of $48.8 million. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, which fell out of the top 25 in the last week in June, this week climbed back up to #25, by bringing in $375 thousand, for a twelve-week total of $54.9 million.
Year One (last week’s #14), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (last week’s #24), and Monsters vs. Aliens (last week’s #25) all fell out of the top 25, after four, eleven, and sixteen weeks, respectively. Year One fell hard, to #28, but X-Men… and Monsters… saw only slip dips, to #27 and #26. Monsters… is closing in on $200 million in box office receipts.
